often times, the more consistent Subs do a ludicrously and unhelpfully small effect compared to their Mo'Nites, with exceptions to more powerful subs and effects. when Sublimated, however, they give a small but successively likely chance to occur anytime the move is used. for all of the Ailment, Buff and Debuff Mo'Nites, they consistently apply their effect on a successful Momentum mode. Obviously stuff will be hit or miss if it's usually acceptable and doesn't constantly excel, so it's fine, I've just seen this kinda usually average writing in a lot of other games, and it feels weird that it's a sticking point for this one.

However, this isn’t because they’re producing top flight games worthy of great praise, unfortunately - I just hope they continue to improve. I’m really keen to see Tokyo RPG Factory continue as an entity. There is much that is a clear improvement - the game is less “monotonous” to play than Setsuna (I liked the aesthetic and the piano music a lot, and actually think the synth orchestration in Lost Sphear is a bit of a downgrade given the overall quality of the composition, but there’s no denying that the snow was quite samey - although I swear the more “mechanical” dungeons like Los Labyrinth are copy-pasted from Setsuna.), and there’s a sense of ambition and intention to get better here. Jeremy Parish mentioned the simplicity of character development in Chrono Trigger as something Tokyo RPG Factory could learn from I’m inclined to agree in this regard. I seem to have a permanent shortage of elemental Spritnite for forging new abilities, but a permanent surplus of everything else I don’t really want to have to spend ages trying to find Fire Spritnite or whatever to get Lumina more than the first few abilities she can forge, for instance, when so many other characters have plenty of abilities already. I don’t know what other people find, but the Spritnite system (while infinitely less over complicated than the version in Setsuna) is still a rather grind-focused model of character development. In an age where options and customisability are regarded as being wondrous things I suppose a sizeable number of people would object to having things a bit more railroaded, but I think the game would be better served by railroading character choice and VulcoSuit usage a little more (I couldn’t help but think of Xenogears in this regard). The game would benefit from pacing itself a little better with regards to its more significant systems no-one cares about cooking, for instance, but the VulcoSuits can be safely ignored for most of the game (and indeed are best ignored due to their limited use thanks to VulcoPoints), and the late game party members are completely optional to use. It is overstuffed with systems that are not used effectively, however. make use of Kanata’s invulnerabilty move on the bosses that have a difficulty spike) there’s little to challenge you in the main game, for better or worse.

It has no aggressively irritating characters, its plot hangs together well (although it does feel a little like Final Fantasy: Greatest Hits, whereas I Am Setsuna was more overtly influenced by FFX), and it is never frustrating to play certainly if you worked out how to play Setsuna effectively (i.e. It’s very much a “comfort food” kind of JRPG. I’m probably around two thirds of the way through (if not more) of the game by now.
